The short answer: A true 3rd edition RBT practice test mirrors the current exam: 85 questions, 90 minutes, 75 scored items weighted to the 6 renamed domains (Behavior Acquisition 25%, Behavior Reduction 19%, Data Collection and Graphing 17%, Ethics 15%, Documentation and Reporting 13%, Behavior Assessment 11%), with coverage of the new tasks: cultural humility, punishment procedures, graph trend reading, and data summarization. If a practice test still says "Task List" or weights skill acquisition at 32%, it is outdated.
1 Why edition-matching matters more than ever
Most outline updates are cosmetic. This one is not. The 3rd edition moved real questions between domains: Behavior Acquisition lost 5 scored questions (24 down to 19), while Behavior Reduction, Behavior Assessment, and Data Collection and Graphing gained. Ethics doubled its task count from 5 to 10. A practice test built for the 2nd edition will therefore over-test reinforcement and prompting while under-testing graphing, assessment, and ethics scenarios, which is exactly backwards from what the current exam rewards.
The new tasks are the other half of the problem. Cultural humility, punishment procedures, graph trend reading, and data summarization did not exist as tested tasks before January 2026, so old question banks contain zero questions on them. You cannot practice what your materials never ask.
2 The format your practice must mirror
The exam format did not change, so your practice format should not either: 85 multiple-choice questions, 4 answer choices each, 90 minutes total, taken in one timed sitting with no pauses. Seventy-five questions are scored and 10 are unscored pilots you cannot identify. Train at about 63 seconds per question, flagging and moving past anything that takes longer.
After each practice test, demand a domain breakdown, not just a total score. The breakdown is what turns a practice test into a study plan: it shows which of the six domains leaked points and which tasks inside them need repair.
3 New content a 3rd edition practice test must include
- Cultural humility scenarios. Questions about recognizing your own biases, respecting client and family values, and adapting your behavior accordingly.
- Punishment procedures. New to the tested tasks within behavior reduction, including when they are considered and the ethical guardrails around them.
- Graph trend reading. Looking at graphed data and identifying trend direction, level changes, and variability, not just defining measurement terms.
- Data summarization. Turning raw session data into clear summaries you would report to a supervisor.
- Expanded Ethics scenarios. With 10 tasks instead of 5, expect more questions on boundaries, confidentiality, supervision, and scope of practice.
If your practice test has none of these, it is a 2nd edition test wearing a new label.
4 Red flags of an outdated practice test
Outdated tests are not useless for vocabulary, but they are dangerous as readiness gauges. A passing score on a 2nd edition test tells you nothing about the 3rd edition exam waiting at the test center.
5 Test your edition knowledge
Flip each card to check whether you can tell 3rd edition facts from outdated myths. If any card surprises you, revisit the 3rd edition outline guide before your next practice test.
6 How to use your practice results
Take one full 3rd edition practice test early as a diagnostic, then one per week, always timed. Map every miss to its domain and task, rebuild the weakest domain before the next attempt, and watch the domain trend lines, not just the total. Book the real exam when two consecutive full-length attempts score in the passing range with no domain collapsing. That is the readiness rule that survives contact with the real test center.
