The short answer: The RBT 40 hour training is a required training course you complete before you can apply for RBT certification. It must be overseen by a qualified BACB certificant, total at least 40 real hours of training, and cover every task in the RBT Task List (under the older rules) or every content area of the 2026 curriculum outline (under the newer rules). You include a copy of your certificate of completion with your RBT certification application.
Where the training fits in the process
Becoming an RBT has a fixed order of operations. The 40-hour training comes early, well before the exam. The sequence the BACB lays out in the RBT Handbook is: finish the 40-hour training, pass the RBT competency assessment, submit your certification application (with your training certificate attached), get authorized, and then sit for the exam. Skip the training, or hand in a certificate that does not meet the requirements, and your application stalls.
Think of the training as the foundation layer. The competency assessment tests what you can do, the exam tests what you know, and the training is where both of those abilities are supposed to be built. Picking a solid training program is one of the highest leverage decisions in the whole process.
Two rulebooks: the older packet and the 2026 requirements
The BACB updated the training requirements alongside the new 3rd edition exam outline. There are two documents to know about, and which one governs you depends on when you apply:
- The RBT 40-Hour Training Packet (02/2024 version) is the older set of rules. It applies to applicants who applied before January 1, 2026. You can read it in full in the BACB 40-Hour Training Packet.
- The RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline is the newer set. It applies to applicants who apply on or after January 1, 2026. The full document is the BACB 2026 training curriculum outline.
The older rules (training packet, 02/2024)
Under the older training packet, the training must meet all of the following:
- Cover all tasks in the RBT Task List (2nd ed.), so nothing on the outline is skipped.
- Include at least 3 hours on the RBT Ethics Code (2.0).
- Include at least 1 hour on supervision.
- Total at least 40 hours.
- Be completed within a 180-day period and in no less than a 5-day period, so it cannot be crammed into a single weekend or stretched across a year.
- Exclude time spent on independent activities (readings, assignments) and on non-behavior-analytic or agency-specific training such as crisis management, CPR, or billing systems. Those hours do not count toward the 40.
The 2026 rules (training requirements and curriculum outline)
Under the newer requirements that apply to applicants on or after January 1, 2026:
- The training must cover the content areas in the curriculum outline.
- The trainee must complete at least 40 hours in no fewer than 5 days and no more than 180 days.
- Section minimum durations total 38 hours, with 2 unallocated hours that can go toward any section.
- The training may be in-person, online, or a combination, but it must include behavioral skills training components. That means some combination of: video-based instruction, didactic instruction, image, video, or in vivo modeling using exemplars and nonexemplars, in vivo roleplay with feedback, content quizzes, interactive activities, and instructor-led discussion.
- Assigned readings may not count toward the training duration.
What counts toward the 40 hours (and what does not)
The BACB is particular about which hours count, because a 40-hour certificate has to mean 40 hours of actual behavior-analytic training. Here is the plain-English split:
Counts
- Video-based and didactic instruction on the required content areas
- Modeling, whether through images, video, or live demonstration, using exemplars and nonexemplars
- In vivo roleplay with feedback from the instructor
- Content quizzes that test the training material
- Interactive activities and instructor-led discussion
Does not count
- Independent activities like readings and written assignments (under the older packet) or assigned readings (under the 2026 rules)
- Non-behavior-analytic training, for example crisis management or CPR courses
- Agency-specific training, for example billing systems or onboarding modules that are unique to one employer

Where to get the training
You have three common paths, and all of them can qualify as long as the training itself meets the rules above:
- Within your agency. Many agencies design their own in-house 40-hour training for new hires. This is often the smoothest route: the training is built around the cases you will actually see, and the certificate is right there when you apply. The catch is quality varies, so ask exactly how they cover each section and how the hours are documented.
- Through a training company. These are live or online courses open to anyone, and they are the most common choice for people who are not yet hired. Compare syllabi, not just price: confirm the provider states the training is built on the current BACB requirements, check the delivery format includes real interactive components (not just recorded lectures), and confirm you get a certificate of completion.
- Through university coursework. Some college programs embed the 40-hour training inside a course or sequence and issue certificates on completion. This route pairs nicely with pursuing a degree in a related field, but verify the embedded training covers the current outline before assuming your coursework counts.
Whichever route you take, ask three questions before you pay: who is the qualified BACB certificant overseeing it, how are the 40 hours broken down by section, and what does the certificate of completion say? A legitimate provider answers all three without flinching.
