RBT Certification Renewal: The 2026 Rules, Step by Step

Renewal is now called recertification, the cycle moved from one year to two, and the yearly competency assessment gave way to 12 professional development units. Here is exactly what that means for you, whichever side of the change you are on.

The short answer: The BACB now calls renewal recertification and runs it on a 2-year cycle. If you were certified before 2026, complete one final annual recertification with the Recertification Competency Assessment in 2026, then join the 2-year cycle. Everyone on the new cycle earns 12 professional development units (PDUs) every two years and pays a $50 recertification fee. The application, the assessment, and the fee are all handled through your BACB account.

The 2026 change in one paragraph

On January 1, 2026, the BACB overhauled how RBTs maintain their certification. The word "renewal" was retired in favor of "recertification" to match BCBA and BCaBA terminology, and the recertification cycle stretched from one year to two. The annual skills check, the Recertification Competency Assessment, was replaced as the ongoing maintenance requirement by 12 hours of professional development units per cycle. Ongoing supervision did not change: it is still required every month you practice.

Which rules apply to you depends on when you became certified:

What the 2026 recertification requires

If your recertification date falls in 2026, you do it the traditional way, one last time. Two parts, in this order:

  1. Complete a Recertification Competency Assessment. This is a hands-on skills check based on the current version of the RBT Recertification Competency Assessment Packet. It must be overseen by a qualified BACB supervisor and completed no more than 45 days before your expiration date. Your assessor hands you the completed assessment once you demonstrate the outlined tasks, and you upload that copy with your application.
  2. Submit your recertification application in your BACB account. Log in up to 45 days before your expiration date and open the RBT Recertification Application under the Recertification tab. The application asks you to upload the completed assessment, report whether you met the supervision requirements during the cycle (or were not practicing), affirm that you have read and will continue to follow all BACB requirements, and disclose any health conditions, investigations, or disciplinary actions that must be self-reported. Then you pay the fee and agree to the Application Processing Agreement. Processing takes about two weeks, so do not file at the last minute.
Your date, your job: the BACB emails recertification and expiration notices, but keeping your certification current is your responsibility. Your expiration date lives in your BACB account and on the public BACB Certificant Registry, and your certification typically expires on the anniversary of the date you passed the exam.

The new 2-year cycle: 12 PDUs

Once you are recertified in 2026, or as soon as you certify in 2026 or later, you move to the biennial rhythm. The core requirement: earn 12 hours of professional development units, logged in your BACB account, during each 2-year recertification cycle. Recertification applications open in your account within 45 days of your recertification date once your PDUs are entered, and you must submit on or before your recertification date to avoid a lapse and late fees.

The BACB recognizes three PDU pathways:

PathwayWho provides itWhat you keep
In-service training at your employer, related to behavior-analytic service deliveryA BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D at your organizationThe RBT Professional Development form from the organization
Professional development eventsAuthorized Continuing Education (ACE) ProvidersThe RBT Professional Development form from the ACE Provider
Didactic behavior-analytic university courses, passed with a C or higherAn accredited universitySyllabi and transcripts

A few things the BACB explicitly says do not count: ongoing RBT supervision, training on a specific client's programming, supervised fieldwork toward BCaBA or BCBA certification, and repeating the same PD activity twice. For in-service training, each event must include at least 25 minutes of instruction (worth 0.5 PDU), and passive solo activities, like listening to a podcast at home, do not qualify.

Keep supervision and PD separate. Ongoing supervision must be client-focused and cannot count toward your PDUs, and one event cannot cover both requirements. Plan your month so the two tracks stay distinct.

Ongoing supervision stays the same

The 2026 overhaul left supervision untouched, and it is still the requirement most likely to trip people up. Every month you provide behavior-analytic services, you must:

Your supervision must come from a qualified RBT Supervisor (a certified BCBA or BCaBA) and/or an RBT Requirements Coordinator, and they must have you listed as a supervisee in their BACB account for your certification to be active. Document everything: service days and times, supervision dates and duration, format, observation dates, and supervisor names, and keep those records for at least 7 years. Substantial noncompliance is serious business: the BACB can terminate your certification or your eligibility to recertify, and bar you from reapplying for six months.

What recertification costs

With the move to a 2-year cycle, the BACB adjusted the fee schedule. The current fees, all nonrefundable:

FeeAmount
Recertification application processing (every 2 years, beginning January 1, 2026)$50
Late fee, added when you submit during the reinstatement period$50
Insufficient funds or returned check$45
Voluntary inactive status application$25
Request to return from inactive status$25

The BACB accepts US currency only, and application documentation must match the name in your BACB account. If your name changed, file a name change request in your account before submitting.

If you miss your recertification date

Missing your date does not erase you instantly, but the clock starts ticking. If you do not recertify by your expiration date, your status becomes inactive, and while inactive you may not practice, bill, or present yourself as an RBT. You then have a 30-day reinstatement period from your expiration date (the BACB operates on US Mountain Standard Time) to reinstate by submitting an approvable application and paying the $50 late fee.

If the 30 days pass without an approved application, your certification expires. At that point there is no shortcut back: you must reapply under the eligibility requirements in place at that time and retake the examination to become an RBT again.

Need a break instead? If you know you will not practice for a while and are still within your recertification cycle, consider voluntary inactive status. You can pause for up to two years with no recertification applications during that time, then return by completing a Reentry Competency Assessment (same content as the recertification assessment) no more than 45 days before requesting reactivation. Miss the two-year window and your certification expires as of the date it would have expired anyway.

Frequently asked questions

How often do RBTs renew their certification?

The BACB now runs RBT recertification on a 2-year cycle. If you were certified before 2026, you complete one final annual recertification with the Recertification Competency Assessment in 2026, then move to the 2-year cycle. RBTs who pass the exam on or after January 1, 2026 start on the 2-year cycle immediately.

What is the RBT Recertification Competency Assessment?

A hands-on skills check based on the current RBT Recertification Competency Assessment Packet, overseen by a qualified BACB supervisor. It must be completed no more than 45 days before your expiration date, and you upload the completed assessment with your recertification application. It was the annual requirement through 2026; on the 2-year cycle it is replaced by 12 professional development units.

How many PDUs do RBTs need and how do you earn them?

Twelve hours of professional development units per 2-year recertification cycle, logged in your BACB account. Earn them through in-service training at your employer, ACE Provider events, or university behavior-analytic coursework with a C or higher. Ongoing supervision, client-specific training, supervised fieldwork, and repeating the same activity do not count.

What are the ongoing supervision requirements for RBTs?

At least 5% of your monthly behavior-analytic service hours, with at least two face-to-face realtime contacts per month. Your supervisor must directly observe you in at least one of those meetings, and at least one must be individual. Phone calls and email do not count.

How much does RBT recertification cost?

The recertification application processing fee is $50 every two years, beginning January 1, 2026. If you submit during the 30-day reinstatement period, a $50 late fee is added. Fees are nonrefundable.

What happens if my RBT certification expires?

If you miss your recertification date, your status becomes inactive and you may not practice, bill, or present yourself as an RBT. You have 30 days from your expiration date to reinstate by submitting an approvable application with the $50 late fee. After that, your certification expires and you must reapply under the current requirements and retake the exam.
