The short answer: The RBT exam is 85 questions in 90 minutes at a Pearson VUE testing center, about one minute per question. Bring valid ID, arrive at least 30 minutes early, flag hard questions and move on, and answer everything: you get your pass or fail result before you leave.
Before you go: the logistics
- Bring valid, unexpired ID that matches your BACB application name exactly. Check Pearson VUE's ID policy when you schedule; no ID means no exam.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Late arrivals can be turned away and lose the $45 fee.
- Know where you are going. Drive the route or check transit the day before. Morning-of navigation stress is avoidable.
- Sleep like it matters, because it does. A rested brain retrieves faster than a crammed one. Stop studying the night before at a reasonable hour.
- Eat and hydrate. Ninety focused minutes on an empty stomach is a handicap you chose.
The 90-minute pacing plan
Eighty-five questions in 90 minutes is about one minute per question. That is comfortable if you keep moving and brutal if you stall. Use the flag-and-move system:
- First pass (about 60 minutes): answer everything you can. If a question needs more than 90 seconds of thought, flag it and move on immediately.
- Second pass (about 20 minutes): return to flagged questions with fresh eyes. Your subconscious has been working on them.
- Final sweep (about 10 minutes): make sure every question has an answer. An unanswered question is a guaranteed miss; a guess has a 25% chance.
During the exam: question tactics
- Read the last line first. Know what the question is asking before you wade through the scenario.
- Watch for NOT and EXCEPT. These reverse the question. Circle them mentally every time.
- Eliminate two, then decide. Most RBT questions have two plausible options and two distractors. Kill the distractors first.
- Trust your first instinct unless you misread something. Changed answers are more often changed from right to wrong.
- Think like the outline. Stuck between two? Ask which answer the 3rd edition outline rewards: the ethical one, the data-driven one, the in-scope one.
After the exam
You get your pass or fail result before you leave the testing center. If you pass, the BACB processes your certification and you are officially an RBT. If you do not pass, you can reschedule: you have up to 8 attempts within one year of authorization, at $45 per retake. Failing stings, but the domain feedback tells you exactly where to aim next time. Read our pass rate guide for the honest retake math.
The night-before checklist
- ID is in your bag, name matches your application
- You know the testing center address and parking
- Alarm set with a buffer, plus a backup
- Light review only: your weakest domain's memory tips, then stop
- Phone charged, but it stays in the locker tomorrow
Walk in knowing you have done full 90-minute runs already. Our exam-day simulator is exactly that: 85 questions, 90 minutes, exam-weighted. Nothing on test day should feel new.
