The short answer: The BACB does not publish an official PDF of RBT exam questions and answers, and any PDF claiming to contain them is unofficial. Most circulating files are outdated 2nd edition content, contain wrong answers, or describe leaked items that could put your certification at risk. Study from 3rd edition practice materials built for the 2026 exam instead.
Why there is no official PDF
The BACB treats its exam items as secure. The board never releases its question bank, and for good reason: 10 of the 85 questions on your exam are unscored pilot items being tested for future exams. If the real questions were public, the pilot data would be useless and the credential would lose its meaning. Anything labeled "real RBT exam questions and answers PDF" is, by definition, not from the BACB.
The board's official RBT page lists the genuine requirements: eligibility, the competency assessment, and exam delivery through Pearson VUE. A downloadable answer key is not among them, and no third-party site can sell you one that is legitimate.
What the circulating PDFs actually contain
Most files fall into three buckets. First, homemade study compilations: someone's flashcard deck or class notes converted to PDF, with answers that may or may not be right. Second, 2nd edition leftovers: decks built for the old task list, which miss the eight new 3rd edition tasks entirely. Third, claimed braindumps: reconstructed items that violate exam security rules.
All three share one problem: you cannot verify the answers. Studying wrong answers is worse than studying nothing, because confident wrong knowledge is hard to unlearn. If a PDF tells you the wrong function of behavior or the wrong order of a procedure, you will carry that error straight into the test center.
The risks nobody mentions
There is also a practical risk: PDFs freeze knowledge in time. The 3rd edition outline took effect January 1, 2026, with new tasks on graph trends, data summarization, punishment procedures, extinction effects, and expanded ethics. A PDF compiled in 2023 or 2024 cannot teach you any of that, and those new tasks are exactly where 2026 test-takers get surprised.
What real RBT exam questions look like (no PDF needed)
You do not need leaked items to know the format. The exam is 85 multiple choice questions in 90 minutes: 75 scored plus 10 unscored pilots you cannot tell apart. Most stems are short scenarios: "During a session, your client does X. What should you do first?" The four options usually include one clearly right answer, one scope-of-practice trap (something a BCBA would do, not an RBT), and two distractors.
If you can read a scenario, spot which domain it belongs to, and pick the answer an RBT is allowed to do, you can handle the format. Our guide to RBT exam questions walks through the patterns in detail, with illustrative examples written for the guide.
What to study instead of a PDF
Replace the PDF hunt with three things built for the 2026 exam. First, a practice bank written to the 3rd edition outline, with explanations for every answer, so wrong answers teach you instead of misleading you. Second, timed full-length practice: 85 questions in 90 minutes, because pacing is a skill no PDF can teach. Third, deliberate work on the eight new tasks, the questions your old materials never saw coming.
The 85-question simulator and our 2026 study guide are both built on the 3rd edition outline, with the new tasks, the new weights, and the same 90-minute clock.
