Where Can I Take the RBT Exam Near Me?

The short answer: at a Pearson VUE test center, and there is probably one closer than you think. Here is how to find it, what the BACB makes you do first, and how exam day works.

The short answer: The RBT exam is only given in person at Pearson VUE test centers, and there is no online or at-home option. After the BACB authorizes you, use the test center search on the Pearson VUE website to find the closest center by ZIP code and pick your date. You cannot schedule until the BACB approves your application.

How RBT testing actually works

Unlike a college course with one fixed exam date, the RBT is a professional certification test with continuous scheduling. Once the BACB authorizes you, you pick a day and time at whichever Pearson VUE center works best, as long as seats are open. There are Pearson VUE centers across the country, including in most mid-sized cities, so most candidates can test within a reasonable drive of home.

The one thing to internalize: the RBT exam is in-person only. The BACB discontinued the remote online proctoring option for the RBT exam, so there is no taking it from your laptop at home. Some other BACB exams still offer online proctoring, which is why you may see conflicting information floating around. For the RBT specifically, plan on traveling to a center.

Order matters: you cannot schedule anything until the BACB issues your Authorization to Test. Trying to book at Pearson VUE before that approval arrives will not work. Apply first, then hunt for the perfect test date.

Finding the closest Pearson VUE center

After your Authorization to Test email lands, head to the Pearson VUE page for BACB exams. The scheduling flow lets you search for test centers by ZIP code and see real appointment availability, so you are not guessing about which dates are open. A few practical tips:

Scheduling and reschedule fees

The exam fee you pay at scheduling is $45 per attempt. Life happens, so here is what Pearson VUE charges if you need to move your appointment. Fees are set by Pearson VUE and can change, so confirm the current amounts when you book.

When you cancel or rescheduleFee
31 or more days before your appointmentFree
30 to 5 days before your appointment$27
5 days to 48 hours before your appointment$32
Less than 48 hours beforeNot permitted
Do not burn an attempt. Missing your appointment counts against your one-year, 8-attempt authorization. If something comes up, reschedule at least 48 hours out instead of no-showing.

What exam day looks like at the center

Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early. Check-in involves your ID, and the center stores personal items like your phone in a locker. Nothing personal goes into the testing room with you. If you need a break or a bathroom trip during the exam, raise your hand and a proctor must authorize it.

The exam itself is 85 multiple-choice questions on a computer, with 90 minutes on the clock. You will see your pass or fail status on screen before you leave the center. There is no waiting period for results, which is one less thing to stress about. Our RBT exam-day tips cover the 90-minute pacing plan and the flag-and-move strategy in detail.

What if the nearest center is far away?

Because there is no online option, some candidates do have a real drive ahead of them. A few things make it easier. First, your authorization lasts one year and covers up to 8 attempts, so there is no rush to test the week you are approved. Use the time to study and then book a date that works around your schedule, like a morning slot that beats traffic.

Second, each attempt costs another $45, so it pays to arrive well prepared rather than treating the first try as a practice run. Our free practice test and the domain-weighted study plan are built to make your first attempt your best one.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I take the RBT exam near me?

Only at an authorized Pearson VUE test center. There is no other testing vendor and no at-home option. After the BACB authorizes you, use the test center search on the Pearson VUE website to find the closest center by ZIP code and pick your date.

Can I take the RBT exam online from home?

No. The BACB discontinued remote online proctoring for the RBT exam, so in-person testing at a Pearson VUE center is the only option. This is different from some other BACB exams, so do not assume a remote option will appear at scheduling.

Do I need BACB approval before I can schedule my exam?

Yes. You cannot schedule at Pearson VUE until the BACB reviews your application and issues your Authorization to Test, which arrives by email. Once it arrives, you can schedule any open date at any Pearson VUE center.

How far in advance should I schedule my RBT exam?

Book as soon as your authorization arrives if you want first choice of dates and centers. Pearson VUE requires appointments to be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance, walk-ins are not allowed, and popular centers fill up, especially in large metro areas.

What does it cost to schedule or reschedule the RBT exam?

The exam scheduling fee is $45 per attempt, paid to Pearson VUE. Cancelling or rescheduling is free 31 or more days out, $27 from 30 to 5 days before, $32 from 5 days to 48 hours before, and not permitted within 48 hours of the appointment. Fees are set by Pearson VUE and can change, so confirm the current amounts when you book.

What should I bring to the test center?

Bring one valid government-issued photo ID whose name matches your BACB application exactly, and arrive at least 30 minutes early. Name mismatches are a common reason candidates get turned away, so check your application name now, not on exam morning.
