RBT Practice Test With Explanations

Answer letters are forgettable. Concepts are not. This free practice set gives you 20 original questions mapped to the BACB 3rd edition domains, and every answer comes with a full explanation of the rule behind it.

The short answer: the most effective RBT practice questions are the ones that teach you while you answer. A bare answer key tells you which letter was right; an explanation tells you why, so you can answer a differently worded version of the same concept on exam day. The scored quiz below covers all six 3rd edition domains with a full explanation after every question.

1 Why explanations beat answer keys

Most practice tests hand you a score and move on. That trains recognition of specific questions, which is nearly useless on the real exam, because the BACB does not release its items and no practice question will appear verbatim. What transfers to exam day is conceptual understanding: the ability to see a scenario you have never read before and still identify the procedure, the measurement method, or the ethical standard it describes.

Explanations are the mechanism that builds that understanding. When you miss a question on partial interval recording and the explanation contrasts it with whole interval and momentary time sampling, you have not learned one question, you have learned three related procedures and how the exam distinguishes them. When you get a question right for the wrong reason and the explanation corrects your reasoning, you catch a false confidence before it costs you points.

The disciplined method is simple. Answer each question below, read every explanation whether you were right or wrong, then restate the concept in your own words before moving on. If you cannot restate it, you do not own it yet. That single habit is worth more than doubling your question count.

2 How the 20 questions map to the 3rd edition domains

The RBT exam follows the BACB 3rd edition task list, in effect since January 2026, organized into six content domains with published approximate weights. The 20 questions below are distributed to mirror those weights, so your score reflects the shape of the real exam:

DomainExam weightQuestions here
Skill acquisitionAbout 25%5
Behavior reductionAbout 19%4
MeasurementAbout 17%3
Professional conduct and scope of practiceAbout 15%3
Documentation and reportingAbout 13%3
AssessmentAbout 11%2

Keep in mind the real exam has 85 questions in 90 minutes, with 75 scored and 10 unscored pilot questions you cannot identify. This set is a teaching tool, not a simulator: work slowly, read the explanations, and use it before you move to timed full-length mocks.

4 How to use your results

Your score on this set is less important than its shape. Sort your misses by domain. If your errors cluster in measurement, that domain is your highest-value study target: three or four measurement concepts repaired here can recover several scored questions on the real exam. If your misses scatter across domains, the issue is probably vocabulary depth rather than one weak topic, and a full domain-by-domain review is the fix.

Pay special attention to questions you answered correctly but hesitantly. A correct answer built on shaky reasoning is a coin flip on exam day. Revisit those explanations and make sure you can state the rule cleanly. The exam tests the same concepts with new wording, and new wording defeats memorized letters every time.

Watch for NOT and EXCEPT stems. The exam loves questions that ask which option is wrong. Slow down on any stem containing a negative, cross out the three correct options first, and pick the one that does not belong.

5 What to drill next

Once the explanations on this page feel comfortable, your next steps should be timed practice under real conditions. The exam gives you about 63 seconds per question, so speed is a separate skill from knowledge. Take a full timed mock, then come back to these explanations for any domain where the mock confirmed a weakness.

For the full preparation framework, our 2026 study guide lays out a domain-weighted study plan, the 3rd edition outline guide maps exactly what changed in January 2026, and the practice set page has additional free questions once you are ready for volume.

Ready for test day conditions

This set taught you the concepts. The 85-question timed simulator tests them under real pressure: 90 minutes, exam pacing, and a full score breakdown by domain.

Frequently asked questions

Are these practice questions the same as the real RBT exam questions?

No. The BACB does not release real exam items, so no practice site can show you the actual test. These questions are originals written to the same domains and vocabulary as the 3rd edition outline, so they train the same concepts and decision skills the exam tests.

How many questions are on the RBT exam and how much time do I get?

The RBT exam has 85 questions and a 90 minute time limit, which works out to about 63 seconds per question. 75 questions are scored and 10 are unscored pilot items that do not count toward your result, but you cannot tell which is which.

What is the passing score for the RBT exam?

The BACB does not publish a fixed number of correct answers required to pass. Your score report tells you whether you passed or failed and breaks your performance down by content domain, which is why practicing with domain mapped questions matters more than chasing a raw score target.

Should I memorize the answers to practice test questions?

No, and this is the most common trap with practice tests. Memorizing answer letters trains you for questions you will never see again. The right method is to read each explanation, restate the concept in your own words, and check that you could answer a differently worded version of the same question.

Which RBT exam domain should I study the most?

Skill acquisition carries the largest share of the exam at about 25 percent of the scored questions, followed by behavior reduction at about 19 percent. Together those two domains are worth more than four in ten points, so they deserve the biggest share of your study time.

Are answer explanations really that important?

Yes. A wrong answer you understand is worth more than a lucky correct one, because the explanation reveals the rule you can reuse. Candidates who review explanations for every question, including the ones they got right, build the conceptual network that holds up under exam pressure.
