The short answer: To renew in 2026 and beyond, you complete a renewal competency assessment with a qualified supervisor plus 12 professional development hours within your two-year cycle. The assessment re-checks the 3rd edition tasks; you cannot assess yourself, and it must be finished before your renewal goes through.
What changed for renewal in 2026
The BACB moved RBT renewal to a two-year cycle with 12 professional development hours, replacing the old annual rhythm. The renewal competency assessment remains the skills check: a qualified assessor observes you demonstrating the tasks and marks each one.
Think of it as the initial competency assessment's younger sibling: same format, same standard, now aligned to the 3rd edition outline. If you were certified under the 2nd edition, the renewal assessment is also your first formal encounter with the new tasks, so take it seriously.
What the renewal assessment covers
Expect the 3rd edition tasks, including the new ones: summarizing data, reading graph trends, implementing punishment procedures as written, describing extinction and punishment effects, and the ethics tasks like gift guidelines and cultural humility.
Tasks you rarely use in daily sessions are the ones that trip people up at renewal. If your caseload never touches a particular procedure, arrange a role-play with your assessor ahead of time rather than hoping it does not come up.
Who can conduct it, and how it is scored
A qualified supervisor, typically your BCBA or BCaBA supervisor, conducts the assessment through direct observation with a client or structured role-play. Each task is scored as demonstrated or not demonstrated; every task must pass. There is no partial credit and no self-assessment.
If a task is missed, your assessor should tell you what to fix so you can re-demonstrate it. A miss is feedback, not a failure, as long as you address it before your renewal deadline.
Timing it right
A useful rhythm is to book the assessment for the midpoint of your final quarter: early enough to fix a missed task, late enough that your skills are freshly rehearsed. Put the date in your calendar the same week you log your twelfth professional development hour, so the two requirements move together instead of competing for your attention.
How to prepare without stress
- Pull up the 3rd edition task list and highlight tasks you have not done in months.
- Role-play the rare ones with a colleague, especially graph reading and punishment procedures.
- Practice narrating: assessors score what they see and hear, so say what you are doing and why.
- Review the new ethics tasks; they are easy points if you have read the code recently.
- Bring your data sheets and materials organized; fumbling for forms wastes observation time.
