The short answer: No. The RBT exam is in-person only at authorized Pearson VUE testing centers. There is no at-home or online option. The BACB ended remote online proctoring for the RBT exam, and it has not come back, so plan your certification journey around a trip to a test center.
Why the RBT exam is in-person only
The RBT is a professional healthcare credential, and the exam has to prove that the person who earned the score is really the person being certified. The BACB previously allowed remote online proctoring for the RBT exam, but discontinued it over exam security concerns: verifying identity, preventing cheating, and controlling the testing environment are all much harder through a webcam in a candidate's living room.
This matters more for RBTs than most test-takers realize. Behavior technicians work directly with vulnerable clients, so the credential carries a duty of care. A secure, supervised testing environment is part of how the certification keeps its value with employers and families. Online training and online practice are great, but the actual exam stays behind locked doors.
Online vs in person: what each step of the RBT journey allows
The confusion usually comes from mixing up the steps. Some parts of becoming an RBT can absolutely be done online. The exam is the exception, not the rule.
| Step | Online allowed? | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 40-hour training | Yes | Fully online courses are common and accepted. This is the biggest chunk of work you can do from home. |
| Competency assessment | No | Done in person (or live) with a qualified BCBA or BCaBA who directly observes you demonstrating the skills. |
| RBT exam | No | In-person only at a Pearson VUE test center. No at-home option. |
| Practice tests and study | Yes | Our free RBT practice test and the 85-question simulator run online on the same 90-minute clock as the real exam. |
What the exam itself looks like
Since you are making a trip to the center, here is what you are walking into. The RBT exam is 85 multiple-choice questions: 75 scored questions plus 10 unscored pilot questions that do not count toward your result. You get 90 minutes, which works out to just over one minute per question, so pacing is a real part of the test.
You take it on a computer at the test center, and you get your pass or fail result before you leave. No waiting weeks for a letter. See our breakdown of how many questions are on the RBT exam for the domain-by-domain weighting.
What this means for your planning
No online option means your exam date is also a logistics date. A few things that make it painless:
- Find your center early. Use the Pearson VUE test center search to see which location is closest and how far out the calendar fills up. Popular centers in big metro areas book up first.
- Travel counts as part of the cost. Factor drive time, parking, and a possible hotel into your exam budget, not just the scheduling fee. See the full fee list in our RBT exam cost guide.
- On military installations: Pearson VUE operates test centers on many US military bases, so if you are stationed on or near a base, check the test center search for on-base availability before assuming a long drive.
- Arrive like it matters. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID that matches your BACB application exactly, and arrive at least 30 minutes early. Our where to take the RBT exam near me guide has the test-day checklist, and exam-day tips covers the 90-minute pacing plan.
Everything you CAN do online (a lot, actually)
The only thing that requires leaving the house is the exam itself. Everything else in the journey is fair game from your couch:
- The 40-hour training: online courses from approved providers are the norm, and you can study on your own schedule. Details in our 40-hour RBT training guide.
- Exam prep and practice: this is where online prep shines. Our free practice test gives you a fast baseline, and the 85-question simulator recreates the real thing: same question count, same 90-minute clock, same scenario-based style.
- Study on your terms: the RBT study guide for 2026 follows the new 3rd edition outline, and the domain-weighted study plan shows where to put your hours.
- Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification page, Behavior Analyst Certification Board, covers eligibility, application, and examination requirements.
- Examination information, Behavior Analyst Certification Board, covers authorization, scheduling, and exam delivery options.
- BACB certification exams, Pearson VUE, covers test center scheduling, appointments, and center search.
